in the fall {in the midst of some really challenging personal times} i made a very strong commitment to myself and and my daily practice. and i don’t have to work on the weekends, so that is fabulous. i have to get up at 6am just to make it to my first job and creating morning practice space for myself has been a real point of conflict. <3 every morning i wash my face, go downstairs to where my altar is, and light the candles. i don’t want to miss a day. francesca – i have been reading your blog for a good 6-7 months now and wanted to thank you so much for the help given during “the art of the private”. i leave for my day job as an economist around 7:30… that sounds like a fantastic way to start the day kristi!
i am really enjoying the benefits of a regular morning practice, which, like francesca’s, varies in format and intensity to suit my needs for the day. i set my alarm for 20 mins in the morning and it’s usually yin yoga. yes, zoning out in the spaces, i can relate to that too. i love to write things out and be open to the day. that way when i wake up, i don’t have to worry about any of that stuff and can focus on my sadhana. <3 i am still working to establish my morning routine and decided to revisit this post. my self-care routine in the morning is this: i make myself a glass of sole (water with a teaspoon of very concentrated himalayan salt water) and head out to the porch to do my practice.
it’s amazing sometimes what just a little bit of time out can do for you; so that is my challenge to you for this week, or even for the month of april — to take some time out with yourself, for yourself. we look after all those around us, and when asked to find the time to meditate, do yoga, take a break, or “indulge” in something that we actually love or enjoy doing, we will more often than not be seen to throw our hands in the air and exclaim that we don’t have time for that! fifteen minutes a day can help you to “find yourself” and move through the other 23 hours and 45 minutes of your day in a much happier, more inspired and alive way. it gets you into a great daily habit and it will help you find your focus as you explore your own sadhana. in just 10 minutes, you’ll feel more at ease, aware and a daily practice will get you into good habits. the word sadhana means daily spiritual practice and the idea of this, is that for just 15 minutes a day you get to think of you and only you. there is only one rule — that you commit to it every day, no matter what. here are some ideas of ways you can create your own sadhana: 3-12 simple rounds of sun salutations (surya namaskara) will set you up for your day like never before!
follow the breath, the inhale and the exhale — or you could add a mantra that flows with the breath if that helps. an ideal way to start or end your day, as it helps you to clear your mind and regain focus. work with around three at a time and repeat twelve times each. it may be simply that you want to have a love-filled day, or there may be something that you need help achieving. commit to breathing, and i mean really breathing. at the end of each day, spend some time writing down all the things you are grateful for. even if you write poetry that’s only ever read by you or sing words that only your ears will ever hear. it can be as simple as lighting a candle every morning to welcome in the day and sitting in blissful silence.
