mindfulness is re-defined here and practicing in this way yields the attainment of what bhante calls the tranquil aware jhanas. he went back to the earliest buddhist teachings, using the majjhima nikaya and found what he was seeking. bhante vimalaramsi has been a monk since 1986 and practiced with many of the major buddhist teachers in asia. he uses the majjhima nikaya as his basis for teaching the “mindfulness of metta” and the brahmaviharas, that lead to the realization of nibbana.
from 1991 to 2000 he dedicated himself to “direct experience through study of the suttas and meditation practice”. his advice was to ‘study the suttas directly and to let go of relying on commentaries like the visuddhi magga’. when he realized the secret of the teachings was on his doorstep he took the majjhima nikaya to a cave in thailand and spent 3 months, living with a cobra as company, reading and then practicing just what the suttas said. he conducts retreats and gives talks in asia and europe, during the cold winter months. to calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.
i approached buddhist meditation 5 years ago starting with the shamata practice and focusing on the breath on the abdomen. then, i started practicing dry insight following ven. mahasi sayadaw method but i quickly realized it was not very “good” for me. things started getting better when i finally found the twim method which is taught by the venerable bhante vimalaramsi. his approach clicked with me. currently i can enter the sixth jhana and stay with mudita for 20 or 30 minutes, then i enter in the realm of nothingness, also called the seventh jhana, which is kinda strange the first time you enter it because everything seems so clear, like a still pond of water. and i can see when my mind begins to shake, when a thought pops up there’s a moment when the mind grasps at that thought. but, yesterday i realized that my approach to life changed a lot thanks to the meditation. it is more soft and very much less anxious.
